Sending a map from Pendrilo Maps into your book, and adding its places to the Codex

Pendrilo Maps can put a finished map straight into your book as a map page, so you don't have to export a picture and import it yourself. In Studio, you can also add the map's place names to your Codex in the same step.

This article assumes you have already drawn your map in Pendrilo Maps and have your book open in Pendrilo Formatter or Studio.

Before you send

Set the page size and look in Pendrilo Maps before you place symbols and names. The map is made for the page it will be printed on, so choosing the size first saves rework. For a map printed inside a black-and-white paperback, use the Ink look. Colours print as grey.

You don't need your book to be open when you send the map. Pendrilo keeps the sent map until you open the book.

Send the map from Pendrilo Maps

  • 1. In Pendrilo Maps, choose Map → Send to Pendrilo.
  • 2. Or click Send to Pendrilo in the Export window (File → Export…).
  • 3. Pendrilo Maps confirms with "Sent to Pendrilo. Open your book in Pendrilo Formatter or Studio to add the map."

Add the map page

  • 1. Open your book in Pendrilo Formatter or Studio.
  • 2. A notice appears at the top of the editor: Pendrilo Maps sent a map:, followed by the map's title.
  • 3. Click Add as a map page.

Pendrilo says "Added the map page" and selects the new page. The map goes on a page of its own before the story. In print, it faces chapter one. It is added as a 300 dpi picture, sized to the map's page.

If you change your mind, choose Edit → Undo to take the page out again.

Add the places to the Codex (Studio only)

In Studio, the notice also has a tick box, Add N places to the Codex, which is ticked at first. N is the number of names on the map that aren't in your Codex yet.

Each of these names becomes a Place entry. Pendrilo fills in its Type (for example, town, castle, forest or water) from the symbol drawn beside the name. You can then open the entries in the Codex and add more details.

If you want only the map and not the places, untick the box before you click Add as a map page.

Keep the map waiting, or discard it

The notice gives you two other choices:

  • Not now keeps the map waiting. The notice comes back the next time the program starts.
  • Discard throws the sent map away. The map itself stays in Pendrilo Maps, so you can send it again later.

Send an updated map

If you change the map after adding it, send it again and add it again. Each send makes a new map page, so the book will then have two. Delete the old one from the chapter list: right-click it and choose Delete….

When you send an updated map, the Codex count only includes names that aren't already in your Codex. Places you added the first time won't be added again.
