Adding pictures, QR codes and links to your text

You can place pictures in the text of your book, turn a web address into a scannable QR code, and link words to web pages, your other books or other parts of the book. This article covers all three. You'll find these tools in Pendrilo Studio's editor, in the toolbar above the text.

Adding a picture

The Picture menu in the toolbar has four options:

  • Picture with caption… places a picture in the flow of the text, with a caption you type in the box under it.
  • Picture at a set size places a picture at a size you choose from Small, on the left…, Small, on the right…, Medium, centered…, Large, centered… or As wide as the text….
  • Full-page picture… places a picture on a page of its own.
  • QR code… creates a code that readers can scan with a phone. See the next section.

Pictures placed with Picture with caption… use the size and position set in Styles → Pictures. A picture placed with Picture at a set size uses the size you chose there, and the other pictures keep the settings in Styles.

In the editor, a picture appears as a label with its caption. To remove a picture, place the cursor in its empty caption and press Backspace.

If your picture is an illustration or photo that a screen reader needs to describe, add a description in Book Details → Picture descriptions. Screen readers read these aloud in the ebook. A picture without a description uses its caption instead. When you generate the book, Pendrilo tells you about any pictures that have neither.

Making a QR code

Use a QR code when you want readers to reach a web page from the printed book, such as a newsletter sign-up or a review page.

  • 1. Choose Picture → QR code….
  • 2. Under Web address, or any words, type your website, newsletter sign-up or review page.
  • 3. Type a Caption under it if you want one.
  • 4. Choose a Size on the page: Small, Small left, Medium or Large.
  • 5. Click Insert.

The code goes into the book as a picture, with the address printed on a line under it. In the ebook, the code is also a link that readers can tap.

Adding a link

Links work in the ebook. In print, readers see only the linked words.

  • 1. Select the words you want to link.
  • 2. Choose More → Link…, or press Ctrl+K.
  • 3. Choose where the link goes:
  • A web page: type the address.
  • One of my books: links to one of your other books. This uses the store links you've added under Also by this author in Book Details. Each store's ebook links to that store.
  • A place in this book: choose a chapter or a subheading.
  • 4. Click Make link.

To change or remove a link, place the cursor inside it and press Ctrl+K. This opens Change link. Edit the destination and click Change, or click Remove link to take the link off and keep the words.

Checking your links and pictures

Before you generate your files, look at the pages in the preview on the right of the Formatter, or the Print and Ebook views in Studio. Then check Checks for links that go nowhere and for pictures that may print soft or have no description. Click Show beside any item to go to it.
