Leaving your own comments on words in Studio and resolving them
You can pin a note to any words in your manuscript: something to fix, check or think about later. Your own comments stay in your project. They never reach the book.
Adding a comment
- 1. Select the words the comment is about, in the Write workspace.
- 2. Click Comment in the toolbar.
- 3. Type your note.
- 4. Click Add Comment.
The words stay highlighted until you resolve the comment.
Finding comments in the Comments tab
Open the Comments tab in the panel beside the editor. If the panel is hidden, click Notes in the top bar to bring it back.
If your book is connected to Pendrilo Online, the tab has a Mine | Readers | All switch:
- Mine shows only your own comments.
- Readers shows only comments from beta readers. They are listed under BETA READERS.
- All shows both.
Beta readers' comments
Beta readers can read chapters you've published with Pendrilo Online, and their comments come back to Studio. Studio doesn't check for them in the background. It looks when you open a book you've published, or when you click Check for Comments in the Comments panel or on the Beta Readers tab.
Each reader's comment is highlighted on the passage it's about, in that reader's colour, with their name in the margin. Click the highlight or the name to open the comment in the Comments tab.
If you've changed the words since the reader commented, the comment says The words have changed since the reader commented. Check that the comment still points where the reader meant before you act on it.
For each reader's comment, you can:
- Click Go to this passage to jump to the words.
- Type a reply and click Send Reply. Your reply appears on the reader's page, marked "From the author."
- Click Resolve when it's dealt with. The reader sees "✓ Resolved." Click Reopen to bring it back.
- Click Delete to remove the comment here and on the reader's page. Studio asks you to confirm first, and this can't be undone from Studio.
You need Studio to be connected to your pendrilo.com account to reply to or delete a reader's comment.
Working with your own comments
Each of your own comments in the list has these options:
- Go to this passage jumps to the words the comment is about.
- Edit the note changes what the comment says.
- Resolve marks it dealt with.
- Reopen brings back a comment you resolved.
- Delete removes it.
Your own comments are deleted straight away when you click Delete. Pendrilo doesn't ask you to confirm, and this can't be undone. If you're not sure you're finished with a note, resolve it instead. Resolved comments stay in the list.
When you change the words
You can keep editing the passage after you add a comment. If you change the words a comment is about, Pendrilo looks for the nearest match and tells you the words have changed. Check that the comment still points where you meant it to, then resolve it or edit it.
Comments and publishing
Open comments appear on the readiness list in the Publishing Desk, under Book → Publishing Desk…. Before you upload, work through that list so no open note is left in the book's text. Resolved comments don't appear there.
Comments are only for your own use while you write. If you want a note that an editor or reader can see, put it in the text itself, or share the chapter through Pendrilo Online.
