Organising chapters: folders, moving sections, and leaving a section out of the book

Your chapter list holds every part of your book: chapters, parts, front and back matter, and folders. In Studio it appears in the Write workspace, and in the Formatter it's under CONTENTS on the left. This article covers how to add sections, rename and move them, group them in folders, and leave a section out of the book without deleting it.

Adding a section

  • 1. Select the section the new one should come after.
  • 2. Click + Add.
  • 3. Choose Chapter, Folder, Prologue, Epilogue, Part, Book (in a box set), Front matter or Back matter.

The + Add menu also offers Picture Page…, ready-made front matter pages and back matter pages, and any SHARED PAGES from your other books. Picture pages and the ready-made pages are covered below.

Front and back matter pages

Instead of building a front or back matter page from scratch, you can start from a ready-made one. Pendrilo has 46 kinds of front and back matter page. Each one goes into its proper position in the book, and comes with starter text, with your book's details filled in. For example, praise pages go before the title page, and dedications and epigraphs go before the contents, with no heading.

  • 1. Select where the page should go in the chapter list.
  • 2. Click + Add, then Front matter pages or Back matter pages.
  • 3. Choose a page type, then a style if there is more than one.

Picture pages

A picture page holds one picture, as large as the page allows. Use one for a frontispiece, a map, or an illustration between chapters. It has no heading or number and isn't listed in the contents. In print it sits on a left-hand page, facing what follows.

  • 1. Select where it should go in the chapter list.
  • 2. Choose + Add → Picture Page….
  • 3. Choose the picture.

Renaming and changing a section's type

To rename a section, double-click it, or right-click it and choose Rename.

To change what kind of section it is, right-click it and choose Change type.

Moving a section

You can move a section in any of these ways:

  • Drag it up or down the list.
  • Select it and press Alt+↑ or Alt+↓.
  • Click the ↑ and ↓ arrows at the bottom of the list.
  • Right-click it and choose Move up or Move down.

Deleting a section

To delete a section, right-click it and choose Delete…, or select it and click Delete at the bottom of the list. Pendrilo asks you to confirm first.

If you delete something by mistake, open Book → Version History… to bring it back. If the section holds other sections, see "Deleting a folder or a row that holds other rows" below.

Folders

Folders let you file sections inside other sections, up to five levels deep. They're useful for keeping drafts together, grouping chapters by act, or collecting a run of chapters you want to move as one.

  • A folder prints as a divider page with its title and no number.
  • A folder with no text and nothing inside it is left out of the book.
  • To file a row, drag it over another row. Drop it on the top strip of the row to place it above, on the middle to put it inside, or on the bottom strip to put it below.
  • To move a row in or out of a folder, right-click it and choose Move into the folder above or Move out of its folder.
  • Click the arrow on a folder or part to fold it shut. A folded row shows how many sections it holds.

The contents page and the ebook's table of contents show filed chapters indented under their folder.

Deleting a folder or a row that holds other rows

When you delete a row that holds other rows, Pendrilo asks what to do with what's inside:

  • Move Them Up deletes only this row. Everything in it stays, one level higher.
  • Delete All of It deletes the row and everything filed inside it.

Leaving a section out of the book

Sometimes you cut a chapter but aren't ready to delete it, or you want to keep another version of a scene. Leaving a section out keeps it in your project without it going into the book.

  • 1. Right-click the section and choose Leave out of the book. In Studio, you can also tick Leave this out of the book under the chapter's notes.
  • 2. The section appears faint in the list, with a dash instead of a number.

A left-out section keeps all of its text. It is not:

  • printed, or included in the ebook;
  • counted in the chapter numbers;
  • checked by Checks or the Publishing Desk;
  • included in Export for Word.

Anything filed inside a left-out folder is left out too. When you generate the book, Pendrilo tells you how many sections were left out. Outline also marks left-out sections.

To put a section back in the book, right-click it and choose Put back in the book.
