Finding and replacing text, and using the To-do list and Scratchpad in Studio

Studio has three tools for working across your whole book: Find, which searches every chapter at once, To-do, which holds the jobs you still have to do, and Scratchpad, which keeps loose ideas and cut lines. All three are in the top bar of the Studio window.

Finding text in the whole book

Find lists every match in the book, chapter by chapter, so you can check a name, a spelling or a phrase without opening each chapter.

  • 1. Click Find in the top bar, or press Ctrl+Shift+F. (On a Mac, use Cmd instead of Ctrl.)
  • 2. Type what you are looking for. Pendrilo lists every match, grouped by chapter.
  • 3. Click a match to go to it in the chapter.

Two options narrow the search:

  • Match capitals finds only matches with the same capital letters. Use it to find "Nora" without also finding "nora" in the middle of other words.
  • Whole words finds "just" but not "justice".

Replacing text across the book

You can replace a word or phrase everywhere in the book in one step. Be careful: Replace All changes every match in the whole book at once, not only the chapter you are in.

  • 1. Click Find and type the text you want to replace.
  • 2. Tick Match capitals and Whole words if they apply, so you change only the matches you mean to change.
  • 3. Check the list of matches to make sure every one should change.
  • 4. Type the new text in Replace with.
  • 5. Click Replace All.

If the result is wrong, you can go back. Choose Book β†’ Version History and return to a version saved before the replacement. Pendrilo keeps your recent versions automatically, and you can also save a named version before a big change, such as "Before renaming Nora".

Keeping a to-do list

Use the To-do list for jobs that belong to this book: a fact to check, a scene to rewrite, a chapter to research.

  • 1. Click To-do in the top bar. The button shows how many items are still open.
  • 2. Type a task and click Add.
  • 3. When a task is finished, tick it off. To delete a task, click Remove.

Open to-dos also appear on the readiness list in the Publishing Desk, so an unfinished task will show there before you publish.

Using the Scratchpad

The Scratchpad is a place for ideas that are not yet part of the chapters: lines you cut, names you are unsure of, or things you need to look up. It is saved with the book.

  • 1. Click Scratchpad in the top bar.
  • 2. Type anything you like.
  • 3. To add more space for separate ideas, click Another pad. You can have up to four pads.
  • 4. Give each pad a name in its Name box, so you can tell them apart.
  • 5. To delete a pad you no longer need, click Remove This Pad.

Text on the Scratchpad is never added to your chapters or to the finished book. To use a line from it, copy and paste it into the chapter where you want it.
