Tracking a revision pass: the THIS PASS column, See What Changed and Finish Pass
A revision pass is one trip through your book with a specific job in mind, such as a line edit or working through your editor's notes. While a pass is running, Studio keeps track of the chapters you work on, so you can see at a glance what is done and what is still waiting.
Starting a revision pass
- 1. Choose Book → Start Revision Pass…, or click Start Revision Pass… in the Outline workspace.
- 2. Name the pass, such as "Line edit" or "Editor's notes".
- 3. Click Start the Pass.
Pendrilo saves a named version of the book when the pass starts. You can use the same name to find it later in Version History.
Reading the THIS PASS column
While a pass is on, the Outline shows a THIS PASS column. Each chapter is marked with one of three words:
- Untouched: you haven't worked on this chapter since the pass began.
- Touched: you have changed this chapter during the pass.
- Added: this is a chapter you added during the pass.
Each row also shows how many words changed. A bar sums up the whole pass, so you can see how much of the book is done.
The column is there to answer one question: which chapters have I already been through? Use it to decide where to go next.
Seeing what changed
To see your edits in detail, click See What Changed. It shows the words you cut and the words you added since the pass began, so you can check each change before you finish.
If you want to compare the book with an older saved version instead, choose Book → Version History…, then click Compare With Now on that version. Changes appear with cut words struck through in red and added words in green.
Finishing the pass
When the work is done, click Finish Pass. This files how the pass came out, so you have a record of it.
You can finish a pass with chapters still marked Untouched. For example, you might skip a chapter your editor didn't flag. Finishing does not require every chapter to be changed.
Named versions in Version History
The book gets named versions in Version History at the start and end of each pass. To look at them, choose Book → Version History….
- To return to an older version, find it in the list and click Go Back to This. What you had on screen is kept as "Before restore", so you can switch back if you change your mind.
- Pendrilo keeps the last 50 versions. Versions you name are kept for good, so the start and end of each pass stay available after the older unnamed versions have gone.
If you want to mark a moment of your own, such as "Sent to my editor", choose Book → Version History…, type a name in the box, and click Save a Named Version.
